Healthy Habits: Week One!

It’s that time of year – the kids are back to school, we are all back into our regular routines and the summer is just a distant memory as the days get shorter. The routines and habits we form at this time of year can have a positive or negative effect on our lives and in particular our health going into the new year. Have you fallen into any bad habits lately? Maybe you have a new found love for a particular junk food or fizzy drink or maybe you are going to bed a lot later than usual? Whatever it is, the good thing to know though is it only takes 21 days to form a new and healthier habit!

So what are you waiting for? What positive changes do you want to make over the next 21 days? Do you have a weight loss goal you would like to achieve? Do you want to improve your diet? Do you want to start taking more time out?…. Whatever it may be all you need is 21 days of focus and dedication. This is why we started our Healthy Habits Challenge – to help YOU become a healthier and happier version of yourself. Our challenge started on Monday 1st of October and it is running for 21 days….because it takes on average 21 days to form a new habit! If you are only joining in now, its not too late, make today Day 1 and simply start! We post a new tip daily on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so make sure you are following us! Below we have a recap of the first 7 days of Healthy Habits!

 

 1: Write down 5 gratitudes!

There is so much power in writing down your gratitudes everyday. This quote from Oprah Winfrey sums it up perfectly: “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough”. This is a simple one but if implemented daily it can have a huge impact on your overall health and happiness by reducing stress, improving sleep and attracting more reasons to be grateful!

Each day aim to write down 5 gratitudes- it’s best to write them in this format: “I am so happy and grateful for ______ because _______”. You can do this at any stage during the day but its best to do this both mornings and evenings.

2: Drink More Water!

You are probably sick of hearing ‘drink more water’ every time health tips are mentioned but water is up there with oxygen in terms of our bodily needs and it is something we can tend to forget about! There are so many benefits to drinking water – it increases brain power, provides us with energy, helps us feel fuller and improves our complexion (to name a few)!

So next time you are hitting the 3pm slump and going to go for another coffee why not try water instead? To make drinking water more interesting why not infuse it with fruit or add a sugar-free cordial for some colour and flavour?Keep a bottle on your desk, like Claire and Amy, and sip on it throughout the day.  

 

3: Walk Your Dog

Dogs are a man’s best friend for a reason and the benefits of spending time with them are endless. Firstly, dogs boost your mood. Spending just 15-30 minutes with a lovable dog can leave you feeling more relaxed and calm and relieve everyday stress!

Secondly, dogs can increase your fitness! Dogs are the ultimate workout partner. Their enthusiasm and happiness for exercise is contagious and just when you think you’ve hit your workout peak, a sudden squirrel sighting will push you through that last sprint to try keep up with them. If you don’t have a dog perhaps offer to borrow one for a walk?

 

4: Read A Book 

When was the last time you read a book, or a substantial magazine article?…Can’t remember? If so, your daily reading habits probably center around tweets, Facebook updates, or the ingredients on your eleven o’clock snack bar! If you’re one of countless people who don’t make a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out.

Reading has a significant number of benefits including mental stimulation, stress reduction, vocabulary expansion, improved focus and concentration! So what are you waiting for? Aim to read just 5-10 pages a day – the perfect time to do this is just before you turn out the light for some shut eye.

5: Treat Yourself!

We all lead busy, hectic lives and it can be hard to switch off sometimes! While we all love the idea of treating ourselves, most of us struggle to actually do it! It doesn’t have to be anything massive, it can be something as simple as watching a movie you love, a takeaway on your way home from work or having a catch up with friends. Whatever it is be sure to do something for you everyday if you can. Having a treat or reward to look forward to each day does great things for your mood and can make those trips to the gym or endless emails all the more bearable!

6:  Spend Quality Time With Loved Ones!

We can all spend lots of time with the important people in our lives, but is that time ‘quality’?  Today we all spend so much time on our phones, watching Netflix and caught up in work that when we are with our loved ones we can often neglect each other. It is really important to be conscious and have distraction-free time together! Even if it is just for 15-30 mins a day having no phones and no distractions will mean you can really talk and more importantly, listen!

7: Spend Time In Nature

In the western society we spend most of our time indoors which is not natural for us as human beings! This video from Velux really hits home at just how unnatural our indoor environments are.

With this in mind it is so important to get outside and go for a walk in nature. Spending time outdoors reduces stress, improves your immunity, lowers the risk of getting seasonal sniffles and when you get moving it gets the blood flowing! Aim to get outside today for at least 30 minutes and see how much better you’ll feel better for it! Even if you don’t want to exercise why not just sit outdoors at your favourite coffee shop if the weather is dry and get all that fresh oxygen into your lungs?
